Federal skilled trade (FST)

The Federal Skilled Trade (FST) program is one of the primary immigration programs designed for skilled workers who want to obtain Permanent Resident (PR) based on their qualification in a skilled trade profession. This program is one of the three Federal programs managed through Express Entry. The FST was established in 2013 to introduce a new pathway for Federal Skilled Trade workers.

Applicants who have worked around the world and are willing to immigrate to Canada. The FSTP is one of three federal economic programs managed by the Government of Canada’s Express Entry system. Express Entry is the main way Canada welcomes economic class skilled workers to immigrate to the country. The qualified candidates can submit their applications for permanent residency through express entry system. It aims to welcome at least 110,000 immigrants by 2024. In order to be considered for the program, you need to meet the minimum requirements and your application will be assessed based on six selection factors.
Note: Federal Skilled Trade (FST) applicants must wish to reside outside the province of Quebec. The province of Quebec has its own eligibility criteria and immigration system.

You must have a valid job offer (paid and full- time (30 hours per week)) from a minimum of two Canadian employers OR a certificate of qualification from a province or territory in Canada.
You must provide proof of language proficiency from a recognized language testing
organization. You must demonstrate and meet the minimum threshold by IRCC and Canadian Level Benchmark (CLB) (we can add the CLB grid here as a link just so the readers know
what it is).
You must have obtained two years of full-time work experience (or alternatively an equal amount of part-time work experience) in a skilled trade for at least five years before applying
for FST.
You must be able to perform the skill and profession that is required for the essential duties of the occupation.

What is National Occupational Classification (NOC)?

The National Occupational Classification (NOC) is eligibility criteria for FSTP, it consists of the
profession and occupation in which FSTP requires. These include:
Major Group 72: industrial, electrical and construction trades
Major Group 73: maintenance and equipment operation trades
Major Group 82: supervisors and technical jobs in natural resources, agriculture and related
production.
Major Group 92: processing, manufacturing and utilities supervisors and central control operators
Minor Group 632: chefs and cooks, and
Minor Group 633: butchers and bakers

How does the federal skilled trade program work?

– IRCC uses Express entry to manage and welcome skilled trade applications in three economic
class skilled worker immigration programs including the FST.
– First, you need to meet the eligibility criteria or alternately the criteria for either Federal
Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) or Canadian Experience Class (CEC).
– Second, once you meet the required criteria, you can upload an Express Entry profile on
IRCC’s website where you will receive a CRS (link to what CRS is, the grid) score based on
your age, education, language skills, work experience, and Canadian work and study
experience.
– Third, after you submit your application, IRCC holds Express Entry draws in which invites
the candidates with the highest CRS scores to apply for permanent residence.
– Lastly, IRCC will then provide a deadline on how much time you have to submit your
permanent residence application.
– IRCC will process your application for up to six months.

Qualified applicants who meets the minim requirements and minimum score of 67 under the program’s 100-point grid, may enter the express entry pool.

Language Requirement
You need the minimum score of CLB 5 in Speaking and listening and CLB 4 in Reading and writing.

Skilled Trade Work Experience
You need at least 2 years full time work experience within the last 5 years under the National Occupation List (NOC) skill type B.

Education
There is no specific requirement for education level. However you may use your qualification to improve your scores if you have a degree , diploma or certificate from a designated organization or you have educational credential assessment.

Job offer or certificate of qualification
Valid job offer for minimum 1 year from a Canadian employer or certificate of qualification issued by Canadian provincial, territorial or federal authority.

Proof of fund
You need to provide evidence that you are able to support you and your family members and settle in Canada.
